Homecare Instructions for Patients of University OMS Associates in RI.
  • Rhode IslandYou may gently brush your teeth, but avoid vigorously rinsing your mouth. After 24 hours, mix 8 ounces of warm water with 1/2 teaspoon of table salt, and rinse 2-3 times daily ... A clean mouth, without debris, will heal quicker with less chance of pain or infection.
  • DO NOT smoke until surgical area is healed (5-7 days). Check with doctor if any questions or concerns.
  • DO NOT use drinking straws for 72 hours after surgery unless otherwise specified.
  • After the removal of impacted wisdom teeth or surgical extractions, swelling of the face may occur for approximately 2 to 3 days. Apply ice for 15 minutes, remove for 15 minutes. Repeat this procedure for 12 hours after surgery.
  • Slight bleeding and oozing is normal for up to 24 hours. If bleeding is present, apply pressure by placing gauze sponges at the surgery site(s), close mouth and bite down for at least 1/2 hour. (Repeat 2-3 times). If this procedure fails to stop the bleeding, try a wet tea bag placed at the surgery site biting down as described. If both methods fail, contact our office.
  • Bruising (facial discoloration)that develops two or three days after surgery may be expected and is not a complication.
  • If no appointment is given for suture removal, then the sutures in your mouth will either dissolve or fall out within two weeks. If they do not, please call our office.
  • When pain develops, utilize the medication prescribed by the doctor. Avoid taking medication on an empty stomach.
  • Dizziness the day of surgery and after taking medication is not unusual. If this persists for more than 24 hours, call our office. If you think you are having an abnormal reaction to medication, please call the office to change your medication.
  • If you have received general anesthesia, you should rest and limit activities for 24 hours. (No driving, operating dangerous machinery, etc.)
  • Diet following surgery: If extraction(s) are on one side of the mouth, try a regular diet and do all chewing on the opposite side. If impacted teeth, multiple, or full mouth extractions were performed, the following liquid diet is suggested for 2 days or until ground or soft food can be tolerated: diet supplements (Boost, Ensure), Carnation Instant Breakfast, Soups, Jello, Custards, Milkshakes, Blenderized foods, baby foods and any foods that are easily broken up and swallowed.
  • DO NOT DRIVE OR DRINK ALCOHOL WHEN TAKING PAIN MEDICATION.
