Rhode IslandInstructions for using the irrigating syringe

If you have just had your wisdom teeth removed at our office, you have been given an irrigating syringe that will enable you to irrigate the sockets where your teeth have been removed. The purpose of this is to help you keep the sockets clean and avoid food from collecting in them. If you have had both your upper and lower wisdom teeth removed, it may only be necessary for you to irrigate the lower ones because gravity should naturally help with keeping the upper ones clean. To irrigate the lower sockets you should follow these steps:

  1. Fill the syringe with lukewarm water.
  2. While looking in the mirror, gently pull your cheek back so you are able to visualize the area where the tooth was removed.
  3. Place the curved tip of the syringe at the area of the socket, being careful not to stick the tip of the syringe into the socket.
  4. Flush the area with the contents of the syringe, and spit out. Do this at each lower wisdom tooth extraction site socket until food or debris is no longer present.
  5. Irrigate the socket after every meal if possible for the next seven days, or until there is no longer an opening at the area of the socket.

If you still have remaining sutures, continue to rinse with warm salt water twice a day for the next five to seven days until all the sutures have dissolved. Do this in conjunction with using the irrigating syringe. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
